Service Description: The Oklahoma Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy is organized into six regional chapters. These six regions were identified during a process to reconcile the two most widely used ecological classification systems in the United States - Bailey’s Ecological Regions developed by the U.S. Forest Service and Omernick’s Ecoregions developed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Each of these regions encompasses one to three of Bailey’s Sections and one to three of Omernick’s Ecoregions. We have attempted to reconcile the differences between the ecological regions proposed by Bailey / USFS with those proposed by Omernick / EPA by grouping together similar regions. In so doing, we have produced a Conservation Strategy that we believe can be applied by agencies using either ecological classification system. Additionally, these regions are similar to the Bird Conservation Regions recently developed under the North American Bird Conservation Initiative. The Bird Conservation Regions were adapted from Omernick’s classification system and are used widely by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Joint Ventures and other conservation partners.
